Punjab’s Smart Waste Management Drive Gains Momentum
Earlier in November, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif launched a groundbreaking initiative to improve waste disposal across the province. She directed authorities to install color-coded dustbins in all markets, malls, commercial centers, government offices, and educational institutions to promote responsible waste segregation.
Phase-I Implementation in Educational Institutions
Under Phase-I, approved in September last year, the Smart Waste Management Process was initiated in both government and private educational institutions across Punjab to encourage systematic waste sorting.
Yellow Bins
Used for disposing of paper, cardboard, packaging materials, and general dry waste.
Green Bins
Designated for bottles, glass pieces, and laboratory-related waste materials.
Purple (Gray) Bins
Used for fruit peels, leftover food, leaves, and vegetable waste.
Red Bins
Allocated for iron scraps and metal waste.
Orange Bins
Reserved for plastic waste, promoting recycling and reduced pollution.
These segregated waste items will later be processed to make them reusable, supporting the government’s goal to reduce landfill waste and promote eco-friendly habits among citizens.
EPA Notification and Helpline Support
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has officially notified the project for implementation. Educational institutions can contact the Punjab Management Helpline (1139) for timely waste collection. The Local Government & Community Development Department will also assist in managing the colored waste disposal system.
This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on urban cleanliness and aims to elevate Punjab’s environmental standards to global levels.
Qingqi Rickshaws Banned to Control Smog
In another move toward improving environmental conditions, the Punjab government has imposed a ban on Qingqi rickshaws on five major highways of Lahore.
The ban covers:
- Mall Road
- Jail Road
- Canal Road
- Main Boulevard Gulberg
- Main Ferozepur Road
This measure aims to reduce traffic congestion, ensure smoother traffic flow, and most importantly, curb rising smog levels in the provincial capital. The government believes that removing smoke-emitting Qingqi rickshaws from key routes will contribute to cleaner air and an improved urban environment.
Conclusion
The CM Punjab Green Credit Program marks a major step toward a cleaner, greener, and more energy-efficient province. From offering Rs 10,000 incentives for adopting solar appliances to launching smart waste management and anti-smog measures, the government is actively promoting sustainable living at every level.
Citizens are encouraged to register, participate in climate-positive activities, and claim their Green Credits to support both their household savings and Punjab’s environmental goals.
